Through Floriography, also known as the language of flowers, my work aims to express human emotions and convey messages by using flowers and plants as the main form of communication. In using this iconographic tradition of floral language, I delve into the symbolism, folklore, and mythology of each flower and how they can be used to express forms of love, protection, fertility, joy, beauty, etc. Inspired by its history, specifically during the Victorian era, I am to create work that encapsulates these coded messages through painting, sculpture, ceramics, and installation. This tradition has been around for thousands of years, practiced by many cultures across the world, and was often used by romanticists in more contemporary times. In my work color is an essential element as it is closely tied to the flower's symbolism. With the incorporation of floriography and abstraction, I created a series called “My Mythical Garden” that focuses on the exploration of these ideas while also tying into the physicality of the imaginative realm. I gain inspiration from elements found in nature and create textural patterns that could signify the forms of flowers, plants, grass, Leafs, trees, etc. while also creating realistic flowers to the mix. For this series, I use heavy texture acrylic as my main medium and my aim with this is to experiment different ways in which it can be used in my process making.
